The ULTRA Story

Asoyia’s ULTRA Low Linolenic Soybean Oil. A product whose time has come!

Development of Asoyia’s ULTRA Low Linolenic Soybean Oil can be traced back to the 1960’s at Iowa State University. There, Dr. Walt Fehr dedicated much of his efforts to developing an ULTRA-stable soybean oil that wouldn’t require the trans fat generating process of hydrogenation.

In the ‘80s, Dr. Fehr completed the development of his ultra low linolenic soybean seed, but at that time, there wasn’t much demand for trans fat-free oils. As health advocates began to shed light on the connection between hydrogenation, trans fats and heart disease, a new interest emerged for alternative oils. When the FDA announced it would require food processors to list trans fat content on all packaging starting in 2006, suddenly Dr. Fehr had a more receptive audience!  The technology was there for a viable trans-fat free soybean oil, but widespread development, marketing and distribution was still a few years away.

In 2004, 25 Iowa farmers formed Asoyia, LLC., a company that specializes in growing and processing 1% ultra low linolenic soybeans for trans fat-free oil and the ULTRA cycle was completed.

Asoyia is the first and only company to introduce “ULTRA” low lin oil made from soybeans with 1.5% or less linolenic acid.

Other “low lin” soybean oils exist, but none have the ULTRA low linolenic acid content of 1.5% or less provided by Asoyia oil. With the growing demand and consumer influence for more and better oil formulation options, Asoyia continued to expand its research to take ULTRA one step further by developing a Mid Oleic ULTRA Low Lin oil. Asoyia MO is readily available for formulations requiring an even higher degree of stability and zero trans fats per serving*. In addition, Asoyia MO is available from a natural process and can be used for natural product formulations.

With growing consumer influence and demand for better oil formulation options, Asoyia is constantly searching for the latest oil innovations to meet our customers’ ULTRA needs.
