The ULTRA StoryDevelopment of Asoyia’s ULTRA Low Linolenic Soybean Oil can be traced back to the 1960’s at Iowa State University. There, Dr. Walt Fehr dedicated much of his efforts to developing an ULTRA-stable soybean oil that wouldn’t require the trans fat generating process of hydrogenation.
In the ‘80s, Dr. Fehr completed the development of his ultra low linolenic soybean seed, but at that time, there wasn’t much demand for trans fat-free oils. As health advocates began to shed light on the connection between hydrogenation, trans fats and heart disease, a new interest emerged for alternative oils. When the FDA announced it would require food processors to list trans fat content on all packaging starting in 2006, suddenly Dr. Fehr had a more receptive audience! The technology was there for a viable trans-fat free soybean oil, but widespread development, marketing and distribution was still a few years away.
With growing consumer influence and demand for better oil formulation options, Asoyia is constantly searching for the latest oil innovations to meet our customers’ ULTRA needs.
